“A Grand Day Out”
There are lots of exciting events, festivals and shows in the next few weeks. Why not grab a picnic and have a fabulous day out with the family?
Yorkshire’s County Shows are always a great showcase for all things agricultural. The largest of the shows is the Great Yorkshire Show held from the 14th to 16th July but there is also the Driffield Show on the 22nd July and Rydale Show on 28th July.
If you fancy visiting one of Yorkshire’s spectacular castles there are lots of events happening. At beautiful Skipton Castle there is “Buckingham’s Retinue Life in the 15th Century” taking place from 18th to the 19th July , Bolton Castle is holding a Tournee on the 25th and 26th July, and Bolsover Castle is holding a Horse and Cavalier Arena Special on the same weekend – a difficult choice for the horse lovers amongst us! Ripley Castle is holding Music on the Meadows on the 18th July, and continuing the musical theme, there is a Musical Showcase Weekend on the 24th and 25th July in central York. Sheffield Supertram are offering a great deal on transport for the Tramlines Festival from the 24th to 26th July. They are offering a special ticket for the festival zone (Shalesmoor to Sheffield Station/ Hyde Park) for £3. It promises to be a great atmospheric event!
For those of you who fancy stepping back in time, there is a classic car rally at Ripon Racecourse on the 26th July, a Rolls Royce Enthusiasts’ Driving Day at Yorkshire Air Museum on the 11th July, with a further “Golden Era” Vintage Motorcycle run there on the 26th. If you fancy transport of a different type, Embsay and Bolton Steam Railway are offering their famous Fish and Chip Specials on the 11th and 25th, and for the youngsters, what can be better than A Day out with Thomas at Kirklees Light Railway on the 18th and 19th .
If you really want to get into the spirit of things past there is a fantastic 1940’s Wartime Weekend and Vintage Fayre on the 18th and 19th at Kelham Island Museum in Sheffield. Its sister museum, Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet, is holding “Archaeology in Action” on the 12th July too. Chesterfield Markets are also featuring times past with their annual Medieval Market, this year held on the 28th July.
All the local museums are “pulling out all the stops” to make sure we have great days out. The Thackray Medical Museum is hosting a fascinating “Tudor Medicine with a Tudor Wise Woman” event which runs from the 20th July to 28th August so you have plenty of chances to catch it!
Don’t forget the fabulous Handlebards who are presenting their very own version of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer’s Night Dream on the 28th and following up with Hamlet on the 29th both held at the amazing Merchant Adventurer’s Hall in York.
Our beautiful county is full of glorious gardens to explore. They are a lovely day out in themselves, but some are heightening the experience by including special days. Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal are holding a Summer Family Nature Walk on the14th and RHS Harlow Carr have a Great Garden Quest on the 24th July, lasting through to the 31st August.
As you can see there is plenty to do and see so make sure you make the most of the good weather this month and have yourselves “A Grand Day Out”!!
