Christmas at Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal

Written by: Elmtree Press

There’s a chill in the air as winter slowly starts to take hold of the North Yorkshire countryside. It’s tempting to wrap up in blankets, sit in front of a cosy pub fire and hide away until the spring starts to appear again but we urge you no! It’s the season of festive fun – the time to come together with friends and family. Here at Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal there’s lots’ going on for you to do just that. Wrap up warm and bring friends and family to come and enjoy precious time together.

Music and Lights kicks the season off with a bang on Sat 25 November. Come and see the abbey bathed in colour, tuck into delicious food and come to hear some live music ringing throughout the ruins.* For the first time, we are lighting the follies: the Temple of Fame, the Temple of Piety and Octagon Tower. You will be able to follow the trail of light down the path from the abbey to Studley Royal and enjoy the sight of these follies bathed in light high up in the trees. *Some evenings will not have live music. Please ring 01765643189 for more information.

Father Christmas’s Grotto - What's that sound? It's the jingle of reindeer bells - Father Christmas is touching down at Fountains Hall this year and he comes bearing gifts. If you've been a kind and helpful little boy or girl it's time to give Father Christmas a visit in his cosy grotto. He may have a special gift for you!

Carols by Candlelight - Come together with friends and family and join in with all your favourite festive songs as we celebrate Christmas in this special carol service held in the abbey cellarium. Christmas Post Office Come along to the post office where you can write and send your Christmas letter off to Father Christmas. All the pens and paper are provided so make sure your wish-list gets sent off in time! The Post Office will still be there after Christmas so if Father Christmas has brought you something lovely you can now write to say thank-you.

Jack in the green family story-telling walk - Join North Country Theatre in this fun story-telling walk around the grounds as they bring to life Jack Frost and the Snow Queen vs. the Green Man of Fountains and the Spirit of Spring and Summer. The walk lasts for an hour.
