Enjoy lazy days and long summer evenings at RHS Garden Harlow Carr, North Yorkshire, as the most northerly of the RHS gardens celebrates the summer season in style.
With the garden at its colourful, scented best, visitors can make the most of their summer evenings with a series of special late events – from open-air Shakespeare plays to live music, as well as a host of daytime distractions.
On the first three Fridays in July (1, 8 and 15), our late open evenings are a chance to listen to live music and enjoy the beauty of the summer garden after normal opening hours. Bring a picnic and blanket and settle in for the evening or enjoy refreshments from Bettys Tea House.
If the Bard beckons, book tickets for not one but two Shakespeare plays: Macbeth on 12 and 13 July and Much Ado About Nothing on 25 August. Younger audiences can also experience open-air theatre on 29 July with Once Upon a Time There Were Four Little Rabbits, a chance to follow the scrapes and escapades of your favourite Beatrix Potter characters. On 5 August, the Pantaloons Theatre Company bring Gulliver’s Travels to the garden.
If it’s a literary lift you’re looking for, head to Harlow Carr’s bookshop for the chance to chat to four very different authors about their latest works. On 16 July, A Year of Cake author Lynn Hill and author of Common Ground Rob Cowen will be on hand to sign copies of their books and answer questions. On 17 July, Precarious Fortunes author Ian Townsend and creator of the DI Yates novels Christina James will talk about the inspiration for their novels.
Visitors can bring a picnic and enjoy live music in the garden every Sunday afternoon throughout July and August, and can enjoy a summer garden tour every Tuesday in July and September courtesy of The Friends of Harlow Carr. There’s the added bonus of a Summer Crafts Showcase in the garden’s historic Bath House Gallery from 23 July – 4 September.
If wildlife is your passion, join Harrogate & Ripon Beekeepers at Harlow Carr’s apiary every Saturday and enjoy beekeeping demonstrations from the local professionals. RHS members can also speak face-to-face with an advisor from RHS Gardening Advice on the first Saturday of each month and every Monday throughout the summer.
