The Great Yorkshire Show – a great day out!

This iconic three-day event is one of the biggest agricultural shows in England.  This year it is celebrating it’s 160 anniversary and encapsulates the very best of food, farming and country life.  Every year more than 130,000 visitors and over 8,500 animals arrive at the Great Yorkshire Showground on Railway Road to compete, socialise and enjoy the spectacle!

Equestrian Dynamo Lorenzo will be back in the main ring with his daredevil bareback horse-riding display.  There will be lots of delicious things happening in the cookery theatre too and the President’s Lawn will showcase the latest ranges of farming equipment and machinery.  There will also be entertainment galore with live music, a professional catwalk fashion show, cookery demos, shopping at the 1,200 trade stands and much, much more!

This year, to celebrate the special anniversary, Emma Stothard has created an amazing artistic interpretation of the Craven Heifer which remains the largest cow to have been ever shown since the 1800s.  The original beast was bred near Bolton Abbey and Emma’s version has started a journey around Yorkshire, setting out from the Abbey.  The GYS has been running a competition to choose the best selfie from each of the locations around the county and the winner will receive a family ticket for this year’s show.  You can admire the amazing sculpture at the show from Tuesday 10th to Thursday 12th at the show.  It is completely life sized at 6ft high, 4ft wide and an amazing 11ft long. Originally people would pay to view the heifer which toured the country and became a national phenomenon.

Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal will be a special guest on Wednesday 11th and will meet officials, competitors and exhibitors at the show.  With her famed interest in farming and the countryside, she is a regular visitor to the show.

In the judging rings, thousands of animals compete for prestigious prizes. There are classes for everything from cattle to sheep, pigs to pigeons and everything in between.  All the animals are always in the peak of physical perfection and it must be a mammoth task to choose the winners!

Why not have a go at picking your favourite?

We will be on the Black Sheep stand, handing out our Go Yorkshire Mini Guides so why not pop by and say hello!  Lots of our lovely clients will be there too including The Black Sheep Brewery, Gorgeous Cottages, Yorkshire's Great Houses, Castles and Gardens and Theakston’s Visitor Centre
