Where to go for Father’s day in Yorkshire

Written by: Little

You may still be wondering where to take Dad this father’s day but don’t panic, there’s plenty of places to go and things to do to treat him to a special day out.

Father’s day is fast approaching and you may be struggling for idea of places to take him in Yorkshire, we know Dads can be difficult to get answers out of sometimes. S,o to help you make it a memorable day out, we’ve come up with a few great ideas of where to take him, depending on what type of Dad he is.

If he quite the adventurous and outdoors type who sees himself as the next Bear Grylls then one of these might be the ideal option for your Father’s Day.

Can your Dad navigate his way around RHS Harlow Carr and come out victorious in the special Father’s Day Orienteering challenge. You’ll have to follow the course on the map, using a special electronic 'dibber' to record how long it takes to complete the course. There will be a prize for the fastest family on each course!

Challenge your Dad’s woodland DIY skills and see if he can make a strong, sturdy and all weather proof Den at the Den Building for Dad’s Day at Brimham Rocks.

Find out how brave your Dad is in the Father's Day Bushtucker challenge at the Tropical Butterfly House, Wildlife and Falconry Centre. Children can challenge their fathers to a Bushtucker Challenge with chocolate grubs and sweets with nasty or nice fillings.

Unleash his inner Bear Grylls in what is probably the most nerve racking activity in this list, with a special Father’s day out at Xscape with the 47ft indoor Climbing Wall Tower and Skyride, or you could send him down the slopes of the Snozone on either a snowboard or skis. Afterwards, you can enjoy a meal at one of the many on-site restaurants with some offering exclusive Dad offers.

Or if you think he’d prefer to watch rather than participate in some adrenaline inducing activities then check out Dougie Lampkin, the legend of trials biking performing at Thornton Hall Country Park.

If you’re looking for a fun and enjoyable Father’s day out near York then head to York Golf Range and Crazy Golf for a fun game of, you guessed it, crazy golf and they also offer footgolf as well as the regular 9 hole course and driving range.

Does your Dad think that nothing can scare him? Well put him to the test on either The Original Ghost Walk of York or York Terror Trail who both provide excellent historically rich and frightening walking tours around York both of which take place every evening.

If he’s a bit of a car enthusiast then check out one of these special Father’s Day events. Firstly, we have the Father’s Day Classic Vehicles event at Nunnington Hall where he’ll enjoy seeing a great selection of classic cars and other vehicles up close which will be on show throughout the day. It’s a great place to to relax and enjoy the food on offer in the tearoom too.

Then there’s the Castle Howard Yorkshire Post Motor Show and Classic Car Rally which offers a fine selection of Best of British classic cars, which will be judged on the day as well as an aerobatic display from a WWII Spitfire. There’s a main event arena with a fun fair, trade stands, crafts and food stalls plus a marquee offering Sunday roasts and serving prosecco and Pimm’s.

You can combine his love of cars with trains at the Kirklees Light Railway where the Morris Minor Owner’s Club will be hosting a rally. So bring Dad down to see these classic vehicles and then take him out for a ride on the train.

Perhaps he’s a bit lazy and likes to see things without really having to move much, whilst eating scones and drinking tea? He’ll most probably like the Cab Rides & Cream Teas at Embsay & Bolton Abbey Railway where he can do just that whilst travelling at high speeds in the powerful and historic class 37 diesel train, with  an English Electric 12 cylinder engine.

If he likes a day out at the races, or if he’s just a big kid at heart, then the Flat Cap & Whippet Family Day Father's Day at Pontefract Racecourse might be the one. This event is aimed at the whole family with a circus, clowns, kids rides, pony rides, face painting and a marching band to keep the whole family entertained.
