York’s Chocolate Story – Know Before You Go (unwrapped)

With a steep history of chocolate making, York is the UK’s home of chocolate.  York’s Chocolate Story has always been a fascinating place to visit so, with the stricter new rules on social distancing introduced to combat Covid-19, it was interesting to see how these changes would affect the overall visitor experience. Without milking the chocolate puns, its plain to say that this sweet experience was excellent. So what can you expect from your guided tour?

Parking/Location – York’s Chocolate Story is in King’s Square (central York) so no parking is available on site. There are many car parks within walking distance or, recommended by us, use one of the numerous Park and Rides on the outskirts of York. Near to the Shambles, the location is fantastic and we were lucky enough to have a fire juggling entertainer outside in King’s Square whilst we were waiting to enter!

Entry – a member of staff greets you at the entrance and gives you a comprehensive brief on what to expect and the restrictions in place. Hand sanitiser is provided. The entrance is adjacent to the impressive chocolate shop and the tour starts with a magical ride in the ‘chocolate elevator’. This proved very popular with the children.

Guided Tour – the tour is as it was before although there is now a reduced capacity on each tour of 16 people as opposed to 30 previously. Our Tour Guide was Rafi and she was extremely knowledgeable throughout the tour recalling the history of the people who founded and worked in York’s chocolate factories – Terry’s, Craven’s and Rowntree’s. Social distancing is extremely well managed on each of three floors with very clear signage and floor markings throughout the building.

Do you have to wear a Facemask? – adults and children (11 and over) must wear a facemask whilst on the tour and in the shop in line with government guidelines.

Sanitising Points – located in several key positions around the attraction. Cleaning and hygiene procedures are very noticeable throughout the attraction.

Verdict – highly recommended. York’s Chocolate Story has been well prepared with all safety procedures clearly in place and enforced. Despite the changes, it is still great fun walking around with the children’s favourites unsurprisingly being the top floor where you get to make and decorate chocolate lollies!
