Surrounded by gardens, with riverside and woodland walks, the view as you turn on to the drive hints at an intriguing past. Beningbrough has been shaped for more than 300 years by the people who lived here; uncover their stories and see changing art exhibitions in the Saloon Galleries.
From the wealthy teenager who inherited it, to the hall’s use as an RAF billet, Beningbrough has regularly changed over the centuries and today visitors can explore these layers of history or simply enjoy a day out in the Yorkshire countryside. Surrounded by parkland, with riverside and woodland walks on all sides there are walks to the widest reaches of the estate and abundant wildlife to spot or listen out for.
The spacious and light-filled Saloon Galleries on the first floor of the hall display exhibitions of contemporary and historic art. The current exhibition from the Arts Council Collection – In the Moment: The Art of Wellbeing has 14 different artworks including sculpture, photography, film and more traditional sketches and paintings. Artists in the exhibition include Chagall, Moore, Emin, Hirst and Lowry.
The gardens are experiencing a renaissance. New planting schemes designed by RHS Gold Award winning designer Andy Sturgeon, enhance the herbaceous borders, walled and American gardens. All year the gardens and parkland are alight with colour – from snowdrops, crocuses and daffodils to dahlias, pumpkins and apples.
Families can let off steam in the wilderness play area or adventure together ticking off one of the 50 things to do before you’re 11¾ play activities. Dogs are welcome to visit to most areas of the garden and in the parkland, so you don’t need to leave your four-legged family member behind. The Walled Garden Restaurant serves hot lunches and freshly baked cakes. You can choose from plants and extensive home and garden ranges in the shop. A holiday apartment above the Victorian laundry provides exclusive out-of-hours access to the gardens if you want to stay a little longer.
