Welcome to the Yorkshire Arboretum: A glorious 120 acre garden of trees set in a stunning landscape of parkland, lakes and ponds on the historic Castle Howard estate near York. Discover space, serenity, sweeping vistas, wildflower meadows and nature-a-plenty in this beautiful sheltered valley. Wander off and explore peaceful hidden glades, follow a tree trail, or simply relax and enjoy the views. Walk for 10 minutes or lose yourself for hours; it’s yours to explore!

Our packed events programme runs throughout the season and includes talks, garden visits, special interest events such as birding and photography, craft workshops and a range of children’s activities.

You can also enjoy delicious, locally sourced food in the arboretum café. The café offers seasonal menus, hot and cold drinks, and a range of utterly delectable cakes to tempt you! Indoor and outdoor seating make it a delightful spot whatever the weather, with glorious views of the arboretum. Our shop stocks a range of souvenirs, books and cards to suit all budgets, so you are sure to find the perfect memento or gift whatever the occasion.

We offer free guided tours every Thursday from April to October, and there is a woodland playground for your little ones. The Yorkshire Arboretum is dog-friendly with a designated 11-acre off-lead area. Disabled parking is available immediately outside the Visitor Centre. While arboretum terrain is unsuitable for wheelchairs, motorised buggies are available on free loan. Call to book in advance to avoid disappointment – a member of staff will be happy to assist you.

The Yorkshire Arboretum is 15 miles north-east of York. Just follow the brown tourist signs for Castle Howard from the A64. The arboretum entrance is opposite the main entrance to Castle Howard. The 181 bus services from York to Malton is operated by Transdev York & Country, stopping at Castle Howard.

Opening Times
2019 Season: 1st February to 30th November. 10am – 5pm daily with extended entry to 5:40pm at weekends from May – October. Last entry and last orders in the café 1 hour before closing.
