Julia Keates Artist

About This Artist

Julia Keates is a versatile artist. Trained originally as an illustrator, she began by free-lancing for the BBC and for Yorkshire Television – but soon felt inspired to teach –running the Art Department at Leeds Girls’ High School for many fruitful years. Married to the printmaker Mike Smith, she has one son, and now has her studio in the village of Addingham, in the Yorkshire Dales.

Julia balances her love of painting with a passion for music – and plays her flute in several local orchestras, including Harrogate Philharmonic. She has an eclectic taste in music and all the arts, and travel inspires her paintings.

Working in oil, acrylic and mixed media, on canvas, and on a variety of scales, her paintings form a visual series – each piece of work relates to the other - each location - every experience - adds to and builds on what went before. Her work evokes the vitality of a particular moment, as it left its fleeting impression at the time.

…’’preoccupation is colour – inspiration is location – and surfaces intrigue….’’ Locations are explored through vigorous and perceptive analyses - via drawing, colour research, and experiments with composition and texture  - with results often formalised,  to further an infinite variety of creative outcomes. Her most recent commissions explore layering – of the organic shapes, light effects, hand-written passages, and textures discovered in landscape.
Julia is usually willing to accept a commission should you particularly wish to acquire one of her paintings which has already been sold. You can view her website:
