Sutton Bank National Park Centre
Thirsk

For a fun free day out, head to Sutton Bank National Park Centre, which has been given a hi-tech makeover. A fascinating exhibition will take you on a journey through time to discover how this iconic landscape was created and the influence it's had on people through the ages. The new Lime & Ice exhibition tells the story of how our iconic landscape and view came to be through the dramatic action of ice age glaciers. Find out about millions of years of Sutton Bank in the making through a stunning CGI film, narrated by earth historian Professor Aubrey Manning or read at your leisure about some of the amazing landscape features around the area.

Children will enjoy the interactive games where they can be a virtual archaeologist, make a fossil, fly a glider or complete Turner's unfinished sketches. Outside, a pushchair and wheelchair friendly path has been created leading to a new viewing platform, which offers stunning views of Roulston Scar, Hood Hill, Lake Gormire and beyond. There are lots of other walking and cycling trails close by too, including southwards to the ever popular White Horse. Alternatively a night time visit will highlight just why it's an official Dark Sky Discovery Site when the dark sky panorama is revealed, perfect for star gazing. There's also an Information Centre for inside info on must sees and dos in the North York Moors National Park. Remember your visit to this special place with a gift from the refurbished shop or sit back and enjoy a taste of the Moors with a bite to eat from the tearoom. Free wi-fi is available throughout the centre.
