    Museums & Arts

    Filey Museum - Filey Museum is in Queen Street in the old part of the town away from the shopping areas and near to the 12th century St Oswald's Church. The museum buildings themselves date from the 17th century one having been a fisherman's cottage and the other a farm cottage. The buildings were saved from demolition in the late 1960s and first opened to the public as a local history museum in 1971. The buildings are Grade II listed.

    Eden Camp Modern History Theme Museum - Housed in the buildings and grounds of an original WWII Prisoner of War Camp, a visit to our unique museum will transport you back in time to experience the sights, sounds and smells wartime Britain.

    Beck Isle Museum of Rural Life – Housed in England’s first agricultural college, this fine historic building is packed full of history.
    Explore period shops, bygones of a Victorian age, including a printer’s workshop, grocers’ shop, gentleman’s outfitters, pub and chemist’s shop. Don’t miss the blacksmith's forge and industrial heritage gallery detailing the fascinating past of the Rosedale ironstone mine and railway. The museum, which opened in 1967, houses wonderful collections of the local life and social history of Pickering Vale including the regionally important Sydney Smith photographic collection.

    Rotunda Museum - The Rotunda is the 2nd oldest purpose-built museum in Britain. Built to the specifications of William Smith - the father of English geology in 1828, the museum has been a focal point for geology and local history enthusiasts ever since.

    Captain Cook Memorial Museum, Whitby – The handsome 17th century house in Grape Lane is where the young James Cook came to serve his apprenticeship in the year 1746. It belonged to Cooks’ master, the Quaker ship owner, Captain John Walker. When Cook was not at sea, he lodged here in the attic with Walker’s ‘other family’ of apprentices.

    It houses a superb collection of original exhibits about Yorkshire’s most famous son. Original paintings, maps and manuscripts, ship models and Pacific artefacts tell the story of the Voyage

    Scarborough Open Air Theatre - Scarborough's Open Air Theatre presents the summer's biggest shows at Europe's largest open air theatre in 2018 - with a stage on the lake continuing to play host to some of the biggest names in the music industry. The line-up for 2018 is bigger than ever with acts announced so far including; The Script, Gary Barlow, Steps, Alfie Boe, Il Divo.
    During the day in the summer months the Scarborough Open Air Theatre also host free summer family shows, with parades and games.

    Stephen Joseph Theatre  - Founded by the pioneer of the theatre in the round concept Stephen Joseph. Internationally acclaimed play write Alan Ayckbourn (previous Artistic Director) hosts all of his worldwide premiers at the Theatre – showing this year Better Off Dead, Joking Apart, both written and directed by Alan Ayckbourn along with a packed line up of plays including The 39 Steps adapted by Patrick Barlow from original concept by Simon Corble and Nobby Dimon, and Build a Rocket by Christopher York both directed by Paul Robinson.

    Scarborough Spa - The Spa is a multi-purpose venue on the Yorkshire coast, offering excellent conference, exhibition, entertainment and banqueting facilities. With a full in house conference and catering team The Spa can cater for any event. Come and enjoy the experience! With shows throughout the year from comedians, musicians, theatrical performances to exhibitions and events such as Sci Fi Scarborough, Vintage Fair and The Scarborough Tattoo Show. 

    Whitby Pavilion - The light and spaciously designed Whitby Pavilion is a multipurpose venue on the Yorkshire Coast, offering a unique blend of modern facilities in a beautiful traditional setting. Taking full advantage of its magnificent location, Whitby Pavilion provides a selection of conference and exhibition rooms all with panoramic sea and coastal views. Much like The Spa, the Pavilion has a year round programme of music, theatre and exhibitions.

    Join the racing elite for the Tour de Yorkshire 2018 - kicking off on the 3 May. 2018 sees the Tour extended to four days, with the Stage Three finish at Scarborough’s striking North Bay.

    Say ‘Thank you’ to our British Armed Forces at the ever popular Armed Forces Day on 24 June – with vintage stalls, marching bands, air displays and music; it’s a memorable day where we show support for our brave men and women, past, present and future.

    The 20th annual Scarborough Maritime Festival takes place on 20 to 22 July. Seafest welcomes budding pirates and land lubbers alike, with live music from dawn to dusk, foods from around the world, demonstrations in the cooking theatre by top local chefs  and over 30 craft and food stalls.

    On 28 & 29 July Filey hosts the Festival of Filey – Return of the Dragon.  With live bands, musicals, motorcycle stunts and riding shows; go along and enjoy a weekend of free entertainment and family fun.

    Whitby Regatta sails in on 11 to 13 August, the regatta is a full weekend of entertainment - embracing yacht and rowing races plus much more; finishing with a spectacular firework display. For those who prefer their entertainment on dry land of the musical variety then stay on for the Whitby Folk week kicking off in and around the local bars 18 to 24 August.

    On 8 September, as the darker nights roll in, we welcome the Goldwing Light Parade to Scarborough’s South Bay; this popular event is one of the UK’s most glitzy Goldwing charity events!
