Families can enjoy a fantastic value day out this summer at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway with its summer programme, enjoy a range of offers including Kids Go Free Travel, School Holiday Saver Rate, and a packed line-up of free and low-cost family activities along its 24-mile heritage route.

Kids Go Free and School Holiday Saver Rate

From 18th July to 6th September, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway is making heritage rail travel more accessible, more affordable, and more engaging for families, with events taking place from Pickering through to Goathland and Grosmont and offering travel through to the seaside town of Whitby.

At the heart of the NYMR’s new fares structure is a commitment to helping more families experience heritage rail travel. Kids Go Free on standard services, with one free child ticket per fare-paying adult, helping families to enjoy the iconic journey through the North York Moors.

A wide range of other free and low-cost activities will also run across the stations throughout the summer holidays, including:

  • Discover Your Heroes Ticket Trail - 18th July - 6th September

Families can explore Pickering, Goathland and Grosmont stations, searching for special trail posters featuring different Railway Heroes. Discover the stories behind famous people, iconic locomotives and important moments that helped shape the railway we know today.

  • Story Creation Station - 1st August - 6th September

Become a railway storyteller - create characters, build your world, then share your storyboard on the display wall at Goathland’s Learning Coach.

  • Station Stay & Play - 1st July, 5th August, 2nd September

Under 5s can enjoy these monthly themed sessions within the Pickering Classroom for £3 per child and £1 for additional children. Upcoming themes include; Construction and Hungry Code-a-pillar

  • Bridge Building: The Tornado Challenge - 27th - 30th July

To mark the legendary Peppercorn Class A1 Pacific No. 60163 Tornado special services, budding engineers are challenged to  build a bridge strong enough for Tornado, and put their skills to the test at Pickering Classroom.

  • Station Storytime - 30th July 1:30-3:30pm

Hear the classic tale of The Three Little Pigs, then find out whether straw, sticks, or bricks make the strongest bridge at Pickering Classroom.

  • Tiny Engine Tuesdays - every Tuesday in August 10am-12pm

Perfect for young explorers aged 0–10, get involved in these  free play sessions with toy trains,  hands-on activities and a remote control maze mat in Pickering Classroom.

  • Train Track Thursdays - every Thursday in August 10am-12pm

Explore trains and track types, build your own engines and bridges with Mega Bloks or magnetic tiles in Pickering Classroom.

  • Build Like Brunel: Bridge Builders Workshop

Put your engineering skills to the test with hands-on building challenges using K’NEX™, bricks, blocks and more. Locomotives like Eric Treacy need strong bridges to carry passengers across rivers, roads and valleys. These sessions, taking place at the MIC in Grosmont, encourage visitors to become NYMR engineers and take on some of the same challenges faced by railway builders in Victorian times for £5 per person ages 5+.

Families can be transported back in time to see 1930s-themed Pickering station, begin a countryside walk from Levisham, explore the operating and engineering world of the NYMR at Grosmont, or visit Goathland, the station that became Hogsmeade Station in the first Harry Potter film. At the end of the line is Whitby, with its bustling harbour and the striking ruins of Whitby Abbey.

Passengers can choose from a range of ticket options with shorter journeys and full day experiences available. Day Rover tickets are available to enjoy unlimited travel across the entire heritage line, with the freedom to hop on and off throughout the day. Shorter journey tickets start at £11.95 per adult (16+).
