The NYMR is where history comes alive on a magical adventure for all ages promising memories that will last a lifetime. Visitors can experience the nostalgia of travel from bygone times and journey back through time along 24 magnificent miles between Pickering and Whitby – one of Britain’s greatest heritage journeys.

A Brief History

In June 1967 a small group of local people formed the North Yorkshire Moors Railway Preservation Society. Its members were convinced that operating the line between Grosmont and Pickering could be viable if sufficient voluntary help was forthcoming. From one person in 1972 the numbers have grown with over 550 volunteers.

In June 2023 we were very proud to welcome His Majesty King Charles III who visited to mark the 50th Anniversary of the official opening of the railway (1973-2023). The King travelled behind Flying Scotsman in the Royal Carriages and met the railway’s CEO and longstanding volunteers.

Hidden Gems and Interesting Facts

Pickering Station is a must-see 1930’s themed station which will transport you back in time to the steam era.

Don’t miss the celebrity station, Goathland, which became Hogsmeade Station in the first Harry Potter film.

Explore Grosmont Station which is home to the operating and engineering world of the NYMR. If you are lucky, you might be able to catch a sneaky peak at the work taking place on our engines!

Visit Whitby with its narrow streets and bustling harbour overlooked by the striking ruins of Whitby Abbey.

What We Offer Our Visitors:

We offer an adult all day, all line, rover ticket as well as tickets for shorter journeys.  Children travel FREE.

The Junior Volunteers Group provides volunteering opportunities for young people aged 10 to 15. We currently have 54 Junior Volunteers on our books. They are supported by a team of volunteer adult supervisors together with a team of Assistant Supervisors who were Junior Volunteers but have now reached the age of 16. Everyone works together to gain knowledge of how NYMR operates and to learn a range of appropriate skills.

The Junior Volunteers Group has five main groups, with between 8 and 14 Junior Volunteers in each. The groups meet once a month from April to October, except for July when, during Junior Volunteers Week, six days of activities are organised, including social gatherings.

Accessibility and Disabled Facilities:

We want all of our visitors to have a great day out at the NYMR - a place for everyone to visit and enjoy a fun day out on board our historic carriages travelling behind a heritage steam or diesel locomotive. We’re committed and continuously working hard to make our site as accessible as possible for all to enjoy and feel included.

Before you visit you can familiarise yourself with our stations with our Access Guides to help you plan your visit.

Disabilities are not just visual and if you are able to travel in a standard carriage, you can purchase your ticket to travel alongside a FREE Carer Ticket online.

Accessible Carriages

Our accessible heritage carriages have been specially adapted to accommodate wheelchairs and electric scooters, with wider double doors and, portable access ramps, space to move on board and an accessible toilet.

Mobility

Visitors with wheelchairs, mobility scooters and limited mobility can relax and enjoy their day. We offer:

  • Free Disabled parking
    •  Free entry for carers (see above for more information)
    •  Free Access Guides
    •  Wheelchairs available at Pickering Station and Whitby Station for access at platforms only, subject to availability
    •  Accessible toilet facilities, across the railway

Most NYMR services can carry manual or powered wheelchairs and mobility scooters up to the following dimensional limitations:

  • Width: 700 millimetres
    •  Length (including footplates): 1200 millimetres
    •  Weight (loaded): no more than 230kg (36 stone), which is the safe limit that many of our ramps can carry

Some powered scooters are effectively road vehicles and are unsuitable for carriage in heritage vehicles. This is because the majority of mobility scooters have wider turning circles than wheelchairs occupying the same space and tend to be heavier and therefore are not appropriate to take on board trains with the confined space in the carriages. We do undertake however to carry those models of scooter that can be folded down into lightweight and manageable components and those that fit within the wheelchair size above.

Assistance Dogs

  • All registered assistance dogs must be up to date with their inoculations
    •  All assistance dogs must be kept on a lead at all times and under strict control
    •  Dogs must not be allowed to defecate anywhere and any incidents should be cleared away by their owners
