The Lord Mayor of London opened the Theatre in Northstead Manor Gardens in 1932, and audiences flocked to see ‘Merrie England’, the first production to be staged at the outdoor venue. The theatre underwent a major refurbishment and on 20 May 2010, the newly refurbished 'Scarborough Open Air Theatre' was officially opened by The Queen of the United Kingdom accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh.

Since its official re-opening, the venue has played host to some of the music industry’s biggest stars, including Sir Elton John, Britney Spears, Gary Barlow, Kylie, Noel Gallagher, Christina Aguilera, Nile Rodgers & CHIC, Olly Murs, Biffy Clyro, Little Mix, Lewis Capaldi and many more. 2024 saw a brand new partnership for the venue as it became the newly named 'TK Maxx presents Scarborough Open Air Theatre' with headliners such as: Busted, Deacon Blue, Fatboy Slim, Becky Hill, Rick Astley, Paul Weller, Jess Glynne & many more.
