Eden Camp’s annual deep clean to preserve history is underway

The annual deep clean at Eden Camp, the modern history museum in North Yorkshire, is underway. The thorough task is needed to preserve and maintain the hundreds of artefacts and displays across the historic site that includes 22 original huts in what is the only remaining prisoner of war camp in Britain.
With hundreds of artefacts on display, ranging from wartime artefacts to historical memorabilia, the team at Eden Camp is dedicated to ensuring that every item is well-maintained and ready for the season ahead.
Each year, the conservation process can take up to a few months, with certain fragile objects and delicate textures receiving particular attention. Current conservation efforts have centred on the cleaning and preservation of several military uniforms. Specialist, non-invasive techniques were used to stabilise and protect each item, ensuring no alteration or damage to the original materials. Prior to treatment, the uniform was carefully assessed, with conservation methods selected to uphold the integrity of the garments and secure their long-term preservation for public display.
During the deep clean process, the team at Eden Camp handle the historic pieces with care, using specialised tools such as soft brushes, microfibre cloths, and cotton swabs. Where necessary, distilled water is used to clean surfaces, and leather products are refreshed with balsam to prevent cracking and deterioration. Display cabinets and historical signage are undergoing cleaning and restoration to maintain their authenticity and visual appeal.
Summer O’Brien, Collections & Engagement Manager at Eden Camp, said: “The deep clean process is a really important part of our conservation and preservation efforts. Throughout the year, the team regularly rotates objects and cleans display cases to prevent deterioration, but the annual deep clean ensures that everything is in top condition for when we open our doors for the main season. The protection of valuable artefacts not only keeps the items preserved, but enhances the visitor experiences and showcases the rich history we have across the whole site.”
