DIG is a hands-on archaeology-themed visitor attraction created by the people behind JORVIK Viking Centre. Giving visitors the chance to become trainee ‘diggers’ and discover the most exciting artefacts from 2000 years of York’s history!

DIG is an archaeological adventure, perfect for young explorers aged 5–12! With help from the friendly team, you’ll uncover some of York’s most fascinating stories, buried underground for nearly 2,000 years!

DIG is split into three zones: Learn, Uncover, and Explore, each one taking you through a different part of the archaeological journey. Whether it’s your first time digging or you’re already into archaeology, there’s something here for everyone!

Kids can dig down deep (in synthetic, no mess soil) to discover artefacts from the four major periods of York’s fascinating history. An Archaeologist is on hand to answer your questions on your finds & help you piece together what it would have been like to live in the past!

PLUS! Launching 21st July, all young dragon trainers are invited to enrol at Cressida Cowell’s How to Train Your Dragon School! 🐉

Get hands-on with fun activities, meet favourite characters like Hiccup, Gobber the Belch, Old Wrinkly, and Camicazi alongside The Hopeful Puffin Mark 4, and uncover hidden treasures in a special dragon-inspired DIG pit. Plus, you can watch exclusive videos from Cressida Cowell, explore original book artwork and maps, and discover the real history that helped inspire the Viking world of the books.

With interactive fun throughout, this exciting exhibition is perfect for Vikings aged 5–12.

Hidden Gems and Interesting Facts

The church of St. Saviour has stood on this site since the 11th century. The present building dates from the 15th century, although some earlier stonework survives. In 1975, the building was acquired by York Archaeology. At first it was used for the storage of finds.

What We Offer Our Visitors

With four special indoor excavation pits, all based on real-life digs in the city and filled with replica Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian finds, children can grab a trowel and explore how people lived in these times. Your experience will also include a talk from an archaeologist and getting up close to real archaeological artefacts!

Why Choose Us for Your Next Day Out in Yorkshire

At DIG, you get to discover only the most exciting archaeological artefacts from the 2000 years of history hidden under the streets of York. Our four excavation pits are filled with Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian finds, so you can grab a trowel and dig up the clues that show how people lived in these times.

Accessibility and Disabled Facilities

There is level access to the entrance and throughout the building. There is a lift to the first floor and an accessible toilet. All staff have disability awareness and Autism Awareness training whilst some staff have BSL training.

Glass doors have contrast markings. We have interpretation available in level 1 Braille translation and in large print. Visual stories are available to download on our website and we have paper copies at our front desk.

Seating is available throughout the building, and we have sensory packs for you to use at our front desk.
